fighting nids we set up a defensive formation. Scouts in black
at our extreme left flank. lots of tac people on the far right. mobile
attack bikes and assault troops in the middle to provide some cover fire
and counter assault where needed.
|
|
The scouts actually held the whole battle (though not seen in this
photo), the attack bikes died but did their job valiantly (endless bodies
of gaunts lay before them). The assault team jumped over in front of the
tac squads to assault the nids before they hit our lines. We did a credible
job but a lictor appeared in the heart of our line and trashed our assault
team before they could assault the nid HQ units... I believe we lost this
one, but conspicuously absent is the Death Company - where are they????

Lots of mounted tac squads makes for a powerful army - but these
things don't come without a price, such armies are often vulnerable to
armor (even though we had assault groups accompanying). My thanks to the
Hello Kitty Sisters of Battle for use of one of their rhinos in this battle
long ago :-)

Closing with the enemy. A must for BA commanders - driving up behind
cover is the key. In this case we hae some attack bikes along for covering
fire - our people are about to assault those eldar snipers on the landing
platform. Running up those platforms is harder than it looks, we barely
reached them (then there was Eldar goo everywhere) although I must admit
that the BA survivors of that assault found themselves the target of much
eldar shooting on the following turn, but they survived and went on to
assault more Eldar via the bridge at the far side of the landing pad (the
extreme right of the photo).

This is an important photo. The Eldar are out of sight in the photo,
but would be right about where this text is. This photo shows a well coordinated
Blood Angel advance - note the forward rhino has driven up and deployed
the tac squad (behind cover of the black firing platform). The second rhino
and speeder and assault bikes are all behind a grove of trees just behind
the lead rhino - the trap is sprung the next turn when the forward tac
squad takes the position, the second rhino moves up into a support position
and the vehicles give support fire. If my opponent was silly enough to
take that position(which was a nice position to have) he could have expected
a LOT of firing damage on my next turn and assaults from two of my tac
squads...

Another general defensive formation. Here we're defending against
orks in a bunker assault. Sorry the picture is so fuzzy! We've got a heavy
weapons group in the top of that bunker, a baal predator beside, Chaplain/DC
behind for counter assaults, a whirlwind behind for support fire, three
attack bikes for more mobile firepower, speeders for more firepower and
(hidden in the bushes) a full tac squad whose sole purpose is to stand
their ground and shoot (do you see a theme here?) :-) We did well this
day, but by the BAREST of margins the orks managed to get one nasty greenskin
inside the bunker at the end of turn 6 - detonating it's high explosive,
trashing the bunker.

Advanced Tactics:
Pincer Assault
A strong ground element (two mounted tac squads)
with lots of support vehicles (two speeders, 3attack bikes, dreadnought
w/missilelauncher/twinlinked lascannons) mounts a focused attack on one
side of the enemy while another powerful assault group deepstrikes in on
the other enemy flank. The deepstrike units must appear behind cover -
then move/fire/assault. Their simple presence/threat can throw even well
laid enemy plans into chaos.

Another view of the pincer battle, our troops can be seen holding
the black firing platform and our speeders and dreadnought are more clearly
visible - it was a great battle :-)
|
|
This is just a fun picture - ooohhh ahhhhh :-)

example 7
|
The assault wave hits! Darkness covered our approach, then we rushed
forward :-) Note the far end of the field a lone BA rhino - we had to search
the buildings to recover a prisoner, the far rhino was the extraction team.
scouts infiltrating fromt he woods helped tie up nearby orks so the extraction
team could check the building. Death Company deepstruck onto the landing
pad (forground right) while attack bikes/speeders/5man tac squad addresses
the center of the ork army - suppressing fire works!
|
|
move into position - and lay down withering fire. after the fire
we put into these nobz with the attack bikes, speeders and marines (I think
the razorback fired at something else) you can see how few orks were left
for our people to assault :-)

example 7a
|
example 7b
|
The scouts were able to approach through cover of the trees and
get into an early assault.
|
The razorback's lascannons took out the giant ork vehicle, I forget
all the details of this one, but we were able to reduce the orks thoroughly
with shooting, our 5 man tac squad lived with only one or two left, the
attack bikes and speeders poured fire into other ork units (supporting
the Death Company) and the Death Company did a fine job keeping the remaining
orks very busy :-)
I know you'll all be pleased to know the rhino drove along the rear
of the buildings and was able to locate the prisoner, free him, and safely
get him away from combat :-)

Another important photo - the half circle formation of Sisters
you see here is actually the SECOND line of defense 0 the remains of the
first line is that big mess of purple past that outcropping of rocks -
the Cannoness herself (and her bodyguard) is holding out against incredible
odds, delaying the nids just long enough for the remaining Sisters to form
a firing line just out of assault distance. The Sisters did a credible
job that day, the nids came running over those rocks and met a wall of
firepower that shook the very heavens, but there were too many of them,
and ultimately the foul Tyranids owned the field. At the extreme lower
left of the photo you can just make out the grey of a bunker which had
a Sisters heavy weapons squad which fired (with great effect) every single
turn of the game.
