Blood Angels Turn 3

This being our first turn since the Chaos Lord and Terminator retinue had arrived the Chaplain & Death Company jumped on over to help deal with the newly strengthened resistance (and to help save our brothers i the tactical squad who were being maimed byt the surprisingly ferocious Plague Marines). Our second rhino driver was so maddened by the sight that he succombed to the Black Rage and drove forward into the ongoing melee - splitting it up into two somewhat sepparated groups. Our second tac squad dismounted and made ready to assault, the Death Company had moved up as close as they could also fully intending on getting into this assault, as were the Sanguinary High Priest and his Honor Guard - the Blood Angels' plan was that once this group of Plague Marines were destroyed all theree groups (tac squad 2, Sanguinary & Honor Guard, Chaplain & Death Company) would sweep forward into the Chaos Lord and his Retine - sure they'd take some casualties to shooting - but the Chaos Lord wouldn't be able to fire on all the units (sneaky plan eh?).

Meanwhile - at the other end of the field - the Blood Angel Devastators continued to pound the rest of the Chaos army relentlessly. The big group of Khorne berserkers was slowly making their way over toward this side of the field - but we'd be ready for them by the time they came near....

Well here's how our assault actually went.... In all this excitement I had forgotten to move my Sanguinary & Honor Guard up into prime assault range - so they failed to get as many of those power weapons into contact as I had wanted. The Death Company were next in line to be moved into assault - all they had to do was move about three inches to contact the nearest Plague Marine (I couldn't have gotten the Chaplain & DC any closer this turn) but that distance was across difficult terrain and the Chaplain DC rolled a one and a two which meant that they could not assault that turn (AAAAAAGGGHHHH!!!!!). My remaining unit the second tac squad then raced forward to hit the Plague Marines....

At the end of the assault phase this is what things looked like (below)

There were three Plague Marines still alive... I can't help but wonder what would have happened if the Death Company had been able to make their assaults as well but such wondering is pointless. As things were now we had two units in one big melee (even though it looks like two - those groups had formed earlier when the rhino had driven forward and split the melee up (yes we fudged on the unit cohesion thing but it seemed like the way to go at the time).

End of Blood Angels Turn 3.

Chaos Turn 3

Chaos movement saw plague marines advance on the Devastators on the other side of the battlefiel. All of my Devastators were armed with plasma cannons, but as I have only four plasma cannon models we substituted lascannons in to fill the requirement (apparently I need to by MORE Blood Angels - it never ends...).

While on this side the Chaos Lord and Terminator retinue moved forward - firing as they moved. With a gigantic explosion our second rhino was destroyed - hitting EVERY Blood Angel in the melee! Fortunately only a few people were lost - but by this time our casualties were really mounting... things were looking grim...

The assault of the Chaos Terminators was terrible - they smashed down the remaining Blood Angels.

Our mighty Sanguinary High Priest fell in one awful moment to the foul toxins in a Plague Marine's Plague knife!

The last two remaining Blood Angels who survived this combat (greatly outnumbered) failed their leadership test and fell back a whopping eleven inches - there were three Plague Marines left (including their Aspiring Champion) and they swept forward in a sweeping advance right into the Chaplain & Death Company. The Chaos Lord and his retinue consolidated forward a bit - setting up for their next turn.

Standing at the endge of the battlefield, the last survivors of the second tactical squad turn and watch the horror of the Chaplain and Death Company as they engage the Chaos horde.....

End of Chaos Turn 3
