I have begun a campaign against Chaos to clear Sector 7G of the Iron Warriors presence from this part of Galathon Prime. Galathon Prime is the main city on Galathon with several spaceports and industrial areas. In m41 the feast of the emperors lamentation Galathon Prime fell to chaos cultist, traitor imperial guard regiments and the Iron Warriors chaos marine legion who took the main industrial and spaceport sectors in a lightning drop pod assault. The distress call from the beleaguered adeptus arbites astropath alerted a nearby Blood Angels crusade force who rushed to the aid of Galathon prime. The blood angels strike cruiser destroyed several major weapons stores and landing sites from orbit but the opening of a warp gate in the southern sector of the city meant that reinforcements were impossible to halt. The return of the Iron Warriors battlebarge drove off the Blood Angels strike cruiser, but not before the insertion of several forces onto the planet below...

Campaign rules notwithstanding after the *first* turn of the campaign I was in trouble. Defeated armies on the 6x6 map grid must move towards the initial deployment line, if they are unable to do this they are destroyed & unable to roll for casualty recovery or experience. Due to a movement error, the first pitched battle if lost would result in my leanest meanest 1500-point force being eaten....

The table was a 4x4 setup, with a crossroads in the middle of the table. The northern half of the table contained 4 large ruined buildings with a ruined bunker at the east end and a parkland area at the edge of the west side. A large bunker with tower and trenchworks had been dug into the park (@#%$ those Iron warriors, destroying our lovely imperial turf) at the end of the road splitting the table from east to west, commanding the crossroads. The southern half of the table contained a large 3-story apartment block on the far east and a large amount of shelled ruins in the centre and trenchworks in the parklands on the west. After setting up the table I realised it was tank nightmare.... The mission to be played was cleanse, using victory points to indicate winner in the case of a draw.
The enemy won the roll for deployment forcing me back into the south east corner. I deployed my predator on my left along with the dreadnought, squad Amaleus and the attack bike. This force would go through and behind the ruined block in the south centre and hold the southwest quarter. I deployed the vindicator in the middle of the street running north-south, facing the crossroads. The DeathCompany and squad Bethor were also parked in the street, ready to use their supercharged engines to leapt through the crossroads and out of sight of the tower in the park, which had become the home of the chaos havocs... the scout squad took up position behind the three storey apartment block ready to move in the first turn. The commander joined squad Veritus in their razorback. Last of all the Landspeeder deployed to my extreme north west of my quarter. I intended to flank waaaaaay around and annoy the predator in turn three.

The chaos commander had deployed first with his dreadnought right in the crossroads, forcing my men 18 inches away from the centre, on a 4x4 board. The chaos predator sat just north of the east west road, between the woods on the west and the first block of ruins. The havocs took cover in the tower overlooking the crossroads. The chaos terminators deployed in the ruins near the predator and the bikers near the north south road. The chaos marines in their rhino waited behind the dreadnought... and the howl of the warp swept over the battlefield...

1st Turn
The Blood Angels restrained their righteous ardour with only the attack bike and landspeeder failing in their attempt to restrain their wrath at the desecration of the emperors finest. The predator sped forwards launching smoke canisters as it rounded the corner facing the enemy predator. Squad Amaleus also ran forward eastward, looking for a decent vantage point to set up their heavy bolter. Dreadnought Azael moved through the rubble to the north west and sited its multi melta at the rhino of chaos marines. Squad Bethor's APC rushed out into the street in front of the havoc squad and dreadnought, the driver gunning the engines furiously to clear the firing line. As the rhino sped behind the cover of the ruined buildings the tactical squad leapt out and prepared to rush into the ruins to find good defensive positions. The death company rhino moved to just south of the east west road, as the vindicator moved to a better firing position, firing its smoke launchers at the end of the move. The scouts ran into the building, the barrels of the sniper rifles and Autocannon reaching forth from the windows and holes torn in the walls. The attack bikes multi melta spat fire at the chaos predator, the shot going wide as the bikers as they navigated the trenchworks, as did the multimelta of the dreadnought at the csm rhino...
The chaos bikes leapt through the broken pond none falling their difficult terrain tests, shooting at the hurtling Landspeeder causing the pilot to halt the speeder before it spun out of control. They then revved the bikes and screamed around the corner into the tightly bunched marines of squad Bethor. The csm rhino lurched from behind the dreadnought and screeched to a halt beside squad Bethor the iron warriors piling out through the side hatch firing upon the Blood Angels and felling one as they ran to assault the hated enemy. The chaos dreadnought lumbered forward and at the sight of the red armoured marines went into a frenzy; his bolter shots pattering off of his Iron Warrior kinsmen harmlessly, who shook their fists at him in anger. The terminators lumbered through the rubble towards the crossroads and the havocs and sorcerer lord moved further up the tower to get a better view of the battle. The turret of the chaos predator turn and white hot Autocannon rounds tore through the attack bike, causing it to flip and explode amongst the twisting earthworks
The chaos bikers smashed into the ranks of squad Bethor and the iron warriors charged chanting their battle cry 'iron within iron without. The battle was furious and yet not a red armoured marine fell to the weapons of chaos. Winning the moral high ground the angels forced the chaos warriors to test but they remained firmly locked in combat. The psychotic chaos dreadnought moved around the corner and attacked the DeathCompany rhino, its huge power weapon failing to get a purchase on the hull as the driver reversed

Turn2
The vindicator reversed out of range of the dreadnought and turned to follow the predator east behind the ruins. The dreadnought failed its black rage and ran *away* from the chaos dreadnought. Gathering its senses it moved back into position and prepared to fire upon the screeching metal beast. The razorback sped along the east west street, unloading the commander and tactical squad Veritus next to the combat. The death company rhino turned and moved *out of the way of the combat* in the centre. Armed only with assault weapons they were no match for the dreadnought, and I held no illusions about the approaching terminators either.
Squad Amaleus fired upon the havocs with its heavy bolter felling one of the ancient marines. The predator fired again upon the chaos predator, but the explosive shells pattered off the thick frontal armour and the lascannon shot did no discernable damage. The scouts fired the autocannon at the dreadnought immobilising it for the turn. The battle between the chaos bikers marines and squads Bethor and Veritas took a new turn, with the commander tearing his way through several chaos marines. However, they held locking the commander in combat with the chaos warrior squad... when I needed him to be running at terminators...
The chaos sorcerer summoned a bolt of energy and hurled it at the predator, immobilising it for the following turn as well as preventing it from shooting. With a muffled boom the razorback was destroyed by fire from the chaos dreadnought as the csm rhino backed down the street to give a clear field of fire. The chaos terminators charged the DeathCompany rhino which amazingly survived all of the chainfist and powerfist attacks (required 6's to hit, he moved :-)). The combat in the between the chaos marines bikers and Blood Angel tactical squads again was a standoff. The commander cutting down three more tactical marines for no loss. The air shimmered and a horde of pink horrors crawled out of the walls in the apartment complex, tearing and clutching at the scouts. Several died, torn to pieces by the pink cackling daemons before they lost their nerve and ran, being shredded by the claws of the pursuing devils within sight of the table edge. The chaos predator peppered squad Amaleus with autocannon and heavy bolter shots felling one of the marines, the cover of the ruins saving the lives of three others.

Turn 3
The Blood Angel dreadnought moved into position on the east side of the crossroads, preparing to fire at the dreadnought. The DeathCompany rhino pulled away from the chaos terminators... and as the APC reversed and sped towards the pink horrors, the DeathCompany leaping out and running towards the devils, the terminators noticed the barrell of the Vindicator turning towards them. BOOM. (hehe).
With a blast that echoed through the streets pieces of terminator armour were thrown for tens of meters around as the vindicator scored a direct hit on the giant armoured forms. The blast shook the dreadnought causing it to stagger drunkenly as out of the smoke filled crater crawled the *lone* terminator aspiring champion...
The space marine Landspeeder twisted through the ruins moving into position the attack the predators rear armour
Squad Amaleus fired again upon the havocs in the building felling another chaos warrior. The gunner in the chaos predator swore as the driver backed the vehicle away from the Blood Angel predator and attacked the Landspeeder, destroying the skimmers multimelta. The chaos havocs fired yet again at the blood angel predator in the park to no effect... from a strong position, the chaos army was beginning to look strained...
The battle in the centre had been locked throughout my turn. The chaos bikers again stood their ground against squad Bethor, however the chaos warriors broke and ran with squad Veritas in hot pursuit. the lone chaos warrior easily outran his pursuers, who disregarded him as a threat and turned to face the terminator in the centre. The death company and daemons remained locked in a swirling melee, the black armoured marines delusions of living out Sanguinus' last moments reinforced as they fought daemons before a ruined building...

Turn4
Squad Veritas moved towards the last terminator and fired, all weapons being ineffective, including the commanders plasma pistol. The Vindicator fired again, the shot going wide missing the dreadnought and destroying the chaos warriors rhino. The Blood Angel dreadnought raised its weapon and destroyed the hideous parody of its noble self with a directly centred melta blast. The struggle between the bikers and tactical squad continued, with the chaos bikers passing yet another high moral ground roll. In the parkland the Predator took aim and finally destroyed the chaos tank. Squad Amaleus fired upon the tower again, dropping yet another two chaos marines.
The last remaining chaos terminator charged squad Veritas. The chaos warrior falling back fired upon the Landspeeder, smiling as he felt a disturbance in the warp as a horde of Tzeench flamers exited the immatterium behind him, but his shot ricocheted off of the speeders thin armour. The Havocs again fired upon the predator, the heavy weapons proving yet again to be ineffective. The chaos terminator champion smashed two Blood Angels to the ground, though the commander held them firm, consolidating into combat. The DeathCompany killed several daemons but the high leadership prevented them from fleeing.

Turn5
The turret of the predator turned and lifted as all eyes in the park were raised to the tower. The roof of the tower vanished in a cloud of smoke as it was lashed with lascannon and autocannon fire, the explosions splintering the parapets. The havoc squad was destroyed and the added fire from squad Amaleus forced the Chaos commander to throw himself to the ground... The Blood Angel Landspeeder used its heavy flamer to terrible effect amongst the tzeenchian devils, destroying all but one. The Aspiring champion terminator fell in combat to the Blood Angel force commander, unable to save 5 times to a power weapon. Squad Bethor again remained locked in combat with the bikers, unable to see them off. In a final blow... the horrors broke and were pursued and hacked to pieces, banished back to the warp with cold steel and righteous anger...

It was at this point that I offered the chaos commander an opportunity to withdraw. With one more turn to go I could not kill the commander of the chaos army (I had nothing that would be able to reach him) and on the plus side he could retain his bikes.

The first game of the campaign was a success for the Blood Angels - things were looking very dangerous up until that vindicator shot as I had very little in the way that could have stood up to those terminators (something to keep in mind for my other forces). Plus with the fact that this game could have resulted in me being outnumbered by a third going into the second turn of the campaign. There is still another battle to take place this campaign turn - against CA Iron Warriors (this list was actually a normal Chaos marine army, with Iron Warrior miniatures). I talked to my opponent & after casualty save rolls (5+ after battle) his forces totaled in a 600 points. Strike force Galathon suffered at the end of the day (after rolls) the loss of a razorback, attack bike, 8 tactical marines and 4 scouts.

All I can say is my esteemed opponent was extremely unlucky. There were several rolls taken where a positive roll may have seen me off. Too many rolls of 1 or two on penetration rolls, too many rolls of 1 or two on glancing and penetrating hits (that predator soaked up all of his havocs fire, for nearly four turns for example). It should have been a very different story indeed

Not that IM going to complain :-)
GLORY TO THE WINGED ONE!!!!
