This was a training mission with my old buddy Mike who I learned 40K with. He had about 2500 points because that was his entire army. I have over 6000 pts of BT but I matched him with 2500 points worth. It was a standard cleanse mission with infiltration allowed. We started on opposite short ends of a 6”x4” table in 18” deployment zones. We set a time limit of 3 hours after we deployed. The map had a large 3 level ruined building in the center which he infiltrated his scouts into. Many small 1 level hills were spread around the map, and there were three 8x8” woods, one in each of our deployment zones and one in the middle along the west board edge. There was a small ruined building in my deployment zone.

I won’t bore you with the deployment details other than to say that most of our vehicles were in hull down positions behind hills and his dev squads and my shooty squads were deployed on hills behind sandbags (4+ cover saves). We counted the hills as blocking LOS for ground level infantry and providing hull down cover for vehicles behind them. They also had difficult terrain slopes but clear tops. He won the roll for first turn. His DC ended up being 6 marines with the Chaplain. I took the vow of hitting on a 3+/must assault.

Marshall Ubrecht surveyed the opposing red forces from the open hatch of his crusader. This was only a training mission but he was determined to show his old BA friend how much his Templars had improved since their first training missions.
He clanged the hatch shut and ordered the 14th to advance with all speed to drive his old friend from the field this day.

BA Turn One: He only raged on one tac squad which moved 3” first. He advanced everything except the LR, whirlwind, scouts, termies and devs. He fired the scouts’ sniper rifle and hbolter at one of my shooty squads and killed one ini. He fired the whirlwind, but it fell short. One dev squad fired at my Tac Three’s hull down rhino in some woods and destroyed it and 5 inside (lucky!) [:(] The LR and other dev. were not in LOS/range of anything.

BT Turn One: My LRC ran up the west side 12” and blew smoke. My speeder squadron advanced 12” into the LOS shadow of the large building in the center. My now dismounted rhino squad remnants advanced behind the speeders toward the middle. My EC and Tac One rode their rhino up to within 6” of the center building blew smoke and unloaded. Tac two’s rhino followed in the crusader’s shadow. My shooty squads stood still to fire. My assault squads jumped forward behind Tac One’s rhino. I fired everything except Tac One (I didn’t want to lose their charge bonus as we were playing v4.7 assault rules) at the scouts and only killed two of them (we gave them 4+ cover because they were in a concrete building firing from windows/cracks. I assaulted the scouts with my EC and Tac One. I could only get the EC in contact with one scout through a gash in the building and he cut him down and Tac One followed him into the building when the scouts passed their morale check and we consolidated.

BA Turn Two: He rolled for rage and only one squad and the LR moved. He stood still with the whirlwind, termies, dread, and devs. His speeder squadron moved around the central building to my side of it on the right (east) side. The DC advanced towards the central building from his center. The priest and honorguard just hung around behind his devs, jumping behind one of the hills they were deployed on. His tac squads on foot advanced towards the central building in a long line across the board. His one loaded rhino squad hung around in back of one of the hills on his side. He seemed to be waiting for me to come to him? His bike squad stayed behind his line of foot troops with Tycho near it.

He fired his whirlwind and only killed one assault marine. His dev that could see anybody fired at one of my shooty squads and failed to kill anyone. His speeder squadron fired on my speeders and destroyed one and stunned another. The cc continued between the EC and the scouts with the EC missing all three of his blows (idiot) and my Tac One only killing 2 scouts. His final scout failed morale and ran but my pursuit roll beat his and we just consolidated again in the building.

BT Turn Two: My LRC moved 12” ahead again down the west side and into the central woods on that side with Tac 2’s rhino trailing it. My assault squads jumped behind the central building on my side of it. My remaining speeder, that could move, moved 7” towards the west side, and the other one drifted 2”. My shooty squads stood still. Tac One’s rhino moved up behind the building. Tac Three’s remnants advanced 6” on foot towards the central building. I fired just about everything except the LRC at his speeder squadron, destroying one and stunning the other two. The LRC fired it’s hurricanes, pmsb, and machine spirit controlled assault canons at a troop squad but only killed two of them. But they failed morale and dropped back 8”. The EC finally killed the last BA scout and he and Tac One consolidated in the large building.

BA Turn Three: Only one of his troop squads raged forward, his priest prevented his honor guard from raging. He moved his dread and bike squadron up towards my LRC to fire their meltas at it. The LR, whirlwind, devs, termies, honor guard, and rhino squad stood still. His foot troop squads moved forward again. His DC entered his side of the large building. His two speeders drifted. Captain Tycho moved up behind the bike squad with the troop squad that had retreated. He opened a hail of fire at my LRC with his LR, dread, termie cyclone, one dev squad, and his bikes, firing 2 TL-lascanons, a HK missile, two meltaguns, one mmelta, another lascanon and 4 missiles. All he did was destroy the LRC's multimelta and TL-assault canon and shake it. [:)] He fired his DC, one troop squad and his other dev squad at my Tac One and EC killing three of my ini's. The whirlwind fired again attempting to hit my assault squads but scattered and missed. He charged his DC and Chaplain at my EC and Tac One in the building. I didn't challenge the Chaplain and we fought it out in the ruins. I killed 3 DC with my EC and powerfisted ini and lost 3. We rolled for victory and I lost, but BT don't fail morale in cc so we consolidated.

BT Turn Three: I unloaded my Marshall and squad from the LRC and they moved forward within charging distance of his bikes. I jumped my assault squads around the building to the east side within charging distance of one of his troop squads. My speeders moved towards his stunned speeders. Tac Two's rhino moved through the westside woods by the LRC. My shooty squad stood still. Tac Three's remnants continued their trek towards the central building. Tac One's rhino stood still behind the building. I fired my speeders and shooty squads at his stunned speeders and destroyed them. I fired the LRC's hurricaine bolters with the machine spirit and killed one marine in a troop squad. I did not fire the Marshall and his squad because I wanted to keep my charge bonus.

The Marshall and 14 screaming templars slammed into his bike squad (27 ini chainsword, 3 pfist, 12 neo sword, and 6 mc-paxe attacks on his bikes, talk about overkill) Needless to say they wiped out the bikes with only one ini casualty in return and then consolidated into Tycho and a troop squad behind them. The Chaplain's assault squad charged into his troop squad killing 6 and losing one also. He made his morale check and they consolidated. The EC and Tac One continued their fight with the DC in the big ruined building, killing all of them and losing all but one (the pfist) of Tac One. The EC also suffered one wound, but he redeemed himself from his poor performance against the scouts by personally killing the DC Chaplain. He passed all his morale checks for squads destroyed in cc within 6". The EC and Tac One ini consolidated behind the north wall of the the building out of sight of the BA forces.

BA Turn Four: He raged forward with the LR. Then he stood still with the LR, whirlwind, dev squads and rhino squad. The Honorguard moved forward to assault range of my Chaplain and assault squad. One foot squad, his dread, and his terminators moved toward my Marshall and Tycho. His other foot squads moved forward towards the central building. He fired the LR, terminator cyclone, and center dev squad at my LRC but only managed to stun it. He fired the whirlwind at one of my shooty squads but failed to kill anyone. He fired his right side dev squad at my speeders and destroyed one.

His dread charged into the combat with my Marshall and Tycho, the termies and other troops were too far away. His Honorguard charged into cc with my Chaplain and assault squad. The Dread, Tycho and troops killed 4 of the Marshall's squad and I killed 3 of his troops and wounded Tycho. We rolled for victory and I lost but we again just consolidated, but I wrapped some of my troops around behind his dread. His Honorguard, Priest and troops fought with my Chaplain and assault squad resulting in 2 casualties on my side and I killed off his remaining troops and two honor guards. He passed his morale check and we consolidated.

BT Turn Four: I moved my remaining speeder towards his right side dev squad. The EC and Tac One's ini moved out of the building within charge range of his honorguard. Tac Two's rhino roared forward and unloaded it's squad within charge range of his termies. Tac One's rhino moved around the east side of the building to shoot at his right side dev squad. My shooty squad in the center advanced towards the central building. My other shooty squad on the right side of my deployment zone stood still. My other assault squad 2, now down to 4 ini's, moved up to charge range of his right side dev squad. The LRC stood still also. Tac Three's remnants finally made it into the central building. I fired my speeder and shooty squad at his right side devs and killed two. The machine spirit fired the hurricaines at one of his troop squads killing two.

My Tac Two charged into his termies. My 4 man assault squad jumped up on the hill with his right side devs and attacked them. The EC and Tac One's ini charged into the melee with his honorguard. My Chaplain killed his Preist and the rest of my troops and EC finished off his honorguard with one assault marine casualty on my side. They consolidated forward towards his center dev squad. He passed his morale check for the dev squad because of the honorguard being wiped out. The Marshall managed to kill Tycho and his troops and the dread was killed by a blow in the back that glanced and then killed it on a 6 (now I'm the lucky one). [:)] They then consolidated. My Tac Two killed three termies and lost 4 ini's and we consolidated there. My assault squad 2 finished off his right side devs with no losses and consolidated.

At this point time was running out and I was obviously winning (I had two controlled quarters and the other two were disputed and I had killed more of his units) so we called the game.

Marshall Ubrecht reached down and pulled his friend Captain Tycho to his feet. He patted his back and congratulated him for a hard fought battle. The umpires had released the shutdown controls on the "dead" marines and they were standing up and congratulating each other. Tycho said to Ubrecht, "Next time we'll give you a better fight, old friend." They clasped hands and smiled and walked back to their respective armies.

Lessons learned:
BT: Stay together and have the units closely support each other in combat. The LRC is an awesome transport just keep it hull down to make it last longer.

BA: Don't go in piecemeal. Don't waste your fire on hard targets like the LRC when it could be used better against softer targets. Don't think your cc units can overpower anybody, the Templars are a very competent cc force.
