Get some foamboard, some red, white, yellow and black paints and a fat paintbrush or two and you too can make a backdrop like this 
to photograph your minis against! Se the mini on whatever terrain or base you want a few feet in front of the backdrop and focus on the mini (this should somewhat blurr the backdrop - adding to the illusion of depth).

Not like I'm a know it all or anything, I just thought this was fun
